Unchanged Reasons for Thanksgiving

Unchanged Reasons for Thanksgiving

1 Thessalonians 5:18 (ESV) ~ give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

One of the most explicit verses related to thanksgiving is 1 Thess. 5:18. This verse commands believers to give thanks to the Lord, not FOR everything, but IN everything. There is a BIG difference here.

In this season of thanksgiving, let us look at Hebrews 13:5-15 for some Unchanged Reasons for Thanksgiving.

Hebrews 13:5-15 (ESV) ~ Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?” Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them. We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat. For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp. So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured. For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.

  • Our Savior (verses 5-6, 8)
    • His Abiding Presence (verse 5)
      • Regardless of where our path leads, we never walk alone
      • Matthew 28:20 (ESV) ~ teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
      • Isaiah 41:10 (ESV) ~ fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
    • His assisting presence (verse 6)
      • He is our Comforter
      • John 14:16 (ESV) ~ And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,
    • His anchoring presence (verse 8)
      • One of our greatest sources of thanksgiving truths is … Jesus never changes!!!
      • Who He was, is who He is, and who He will always be!
      • He is still “I AM”
      • He still possesses all power in heaven and earth.
      • Matthew 28:18 (ESV) ~ And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
    • Our Salvation (verses 9-12)
      • The Price of It (verse 9)
        • This verse mentions GRACE!
        • We can thank God that salvation is given without cost
        • Isaiah 55:1 (ESV) ~ Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
        • Revelation 22:17 (ESV) ~ The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.
        • It is purely an operation of GRACE!
        • We were dead in sin, He sought us, He called us, He died for us, He redeemed us, He keeps us!
        • All we did was exercise the faith God gave us!
        • Ephesians 2:8-9 (ESV) ~ For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
      • The Purposes of it (verse 12)
        • We are told that He suffered the death so that He might “sanctify the people”.
        • The word “sanctify” means “to separate from vain things and set apart for God’s use.” This is why Jesus died!
      • Our Separation (verse 13)
        • The call of this verses is for us to do on the outside what He did on the inside.
        • He has set us apart inwardly through the redemption of the blood of Jesus.
        • He calls us to willingly take our stand with Jesus on the outside in our lives.
        • Matthew 16:24 (ESV) ~ Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
        • He is telling us to be different.
        • 2 Corinthians 6:17 (ESV) ~ Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you
      • Our Sanctuary (verse 14)

One Response to “Unchanged Reasons for Thanksgiving”

  1. Keith Leasure says:

Thank you for today’s word from God. I enjoyed how you broke out the sermon and how it fits together for the focus of discussion. Jesus is our perfect example of our true life but we tend to fall short through the many temptations put in front of us to distract the truth. I pray for guidance everyday knowing what you just stated: Jesus never changes! He IS the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE we should all be following. Thanksgiving is more than the meal and the fellowship. It is the time to be thankful in all the good gifts and grace we have been allowed through the sacrifice of Jesus. We who are not worthy have the opportunity to allow that perfect example of Jesus to influence and guide our life – and be a blessing to others in sharing the love he has blessed all of us with. Amen.
