The Holy Spirit ~ His Personality

The Holy Spirit ~ His Personality

It is vital before we look at the Gifts of the Holy Spirit to look at the truth of His Personality.

The first question we are asked often is, “Who is the Holy Spirit?”

  • The Holy Spirit is the third coequal and coexistent with the Father and the Son.
  • The three share and are combined in personality; namely intelligence, emotion, intellect, sensibility and will.
  • The personality of the Holy Spirit is set forth in the following biblical facts:
    • Personal names given to the Holy Spirit
      • The Comforter or Helper
        • John 14:16 (ESV) ~ And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever
        • John 15:26 (ESV) ~ But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.
        • John 16:7 (ESV) ~ Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
      • The Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit
        • Matthew 28:19 (ESV) ~ Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
        • Acts 2:4 (ESV) ~ And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
      • Personal pronouns are used of Him (John 14:16-26; 15:26; 16:7-15)
      • Personal association with the Father and the Son indicate personality
        • 2 Corinthians 13:14 (ESV) ~ The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
      • Personal attributes and works are ascribed to Him
        • He speaks, searches, wills, reveals, commands, guides, makes intercession, chooses church leaders, orders the affairs of the church.
        • Acts 20:28 (ESV) ~ Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.
        • Romans 8:26-27 (ESV) ~ Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
      • Personal treatment is ascribed to Him; He can be …
        • Lied to ~ Acts 5:3-4 (ESV) ~ But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.”
        • Tempted ~ Acts 5:9 (ESV) ~ But Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.”
        • Resisted ~ Acts 7:51 (ESV) ~ “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.
        • Grieved ~ Ephesians 4:30 (ESV) ~ And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
        • Quenched ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:19 (ESV) ~ Do not quench the Spirit.

Main lesson ~ Be careful how you treat the Holy Spirit of God. He must be reverenced, revered, and honored.
