The Light Sent from Heaven

The Light Sent from Heaven

Acts 9:1-7 (ESV) ~ But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him. And falling to the ground he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.” The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but seeing no one.

Notes:

  • It was while Saul was set on his slaughter of believers that he was stricken down by the light from the Lord. It was in the midst of his ferocious evil that he was saved. (There is hope for all, for anyone of us.)
  • The light appeared suddenly, out of nowhere, unexpectedly.
  • The light was from heaven. It was supernatural and miraculous, from God Himself. God is the source and giver of the light.
  • The light was great, that is, brighter than the noonday sun (Acts 22:6; Acts 26:13. Imagine a light so bright it actually outshines the sun!) When it burst forth, Saul saw the Lord standing in the midst of it (1 Corinthians 9:1; 5:8). The light radiated from the Lord Himself.
    • Matthew 17:2 ~ Jesus face did shine as the sun and His raiment was as white as the light
    • 1 John 1:5 ~ God is Light
    • 1 Timothy 6:16 ~ God dwelling in the light which no man can approach
    • Psalm 104:2 ~ God who covers thyself with light as with a garment
  • Now note what Scripture proclaims to all hearts. Light, the very presence of God Himself, is the first thing experienced in salvation.
  • God has to shine in a man’s heart for a man to be saved; he has to give the knowledge of the glory of God in Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the Lord of heaven, the Son of God Himself. God’s very own glory dwells in Jesus Christ. Therefore, for a man to know God’s glory, he must know the face of Jesus Christ. He must receive light, the knowledge, the understanding, the awareness, the consciousness, the quickening that Jesus is the Savior, the Son of God Himself.

John 8:12 (ESV) ~ Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
