You Can Be a Godly Father

You Can Be a Godly Father

The father is the source of the family. He is the wellspring that provides a sense of well-being. A father is intended to be God’s representative in the family. In this role, he has certain responsibilities. These are spelled out in three Biblical roles He is to fulfill.

  • A Father is a priest who represents the family to God
    • A father carries his family to God in prayer (Job 1:5)
    • A Father believe God for his family.
      • The father has a unique standing for the family before God and against the Enemy.
      • The principle is seen repeatedly in Scripture.
        • Mark 9:23-24 (ESV) ~ And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”
      • A father establishes the home’s salvation.
        • In Scripture, salvation affected the whole family
          • Joshua 24:15 (ESV) ~ And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
          • John 4:53 (ESV) ~ The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household.
        • In Scripture, a father’s righteousness covered the family with protection.
          • Genesis 6:8-9 (ESV) ~ But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD. These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God.
        • A Father serves as a prophet to his family
          • He represents God to those who are under his care.
          • He hears from God on behalf of the family.
            • Hebrews 11:7 (ESV) ~ By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
          • He speaks God’s Word to his family.
          • His first responsibility is to teach God’s Word with his own direction and God-consciousness.
          • He sets the example of godliness in the home.
            • Ephesians 6:4 (ESV) ~ Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
          • A Father serves as a king to the family.
            • The role of king rightfully follows that of priest and prophet. This is a rightful progression, because once a man has become his family’s true priest and prophet, he can be the king. When a man accepts this responsibility, God will back him with an authority in the home that rules with wisdom and love… and is honored.
            • The father is to manage, oversee and rule on behalf of God.
            • The father’s role is one of accountability and responsibility.
              • Genesis 18:19 (ESV) ~ For I have chosen him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing righteousness and justice, so that the LORD may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.

You may not have grown up with a righteous father, you may not have acted in your past as a righteous father, but God wants to turn that around. He wants you to know that you can and have been delivered from the curse of unrighteousness, and that you can forgive you father and yourself, and begin your own godly line today. You can be the Biblical Godly Father in your family starting right now.
