Indwelt by the Spirit

Indwelt by the Spirit

Ezekiel 36:25-28 (ESV) ~ I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and you shall be my people, and I will be your God.

We have talked about the effects of justification, and regeneration or new birth.

• Justification is the act of forgiveness that restores our covenant relationship to God. We are freed from guilt and are declared to be righteous.
• Regeneration is the new birth, which implants new life in us and partially restores the image of God in us.
• The strength to walk with God in the restored relationship and the sustenance of the new life within us are provided by the Holy Spirit, who comes to dwell in our hearts when we become a Christian (Romans 5:9).

Before His crucifixion, Jesus promised the disciples that the Holy Spirit would come…

John 14:16-17 (ESV) ~ And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

Peter preached to the crowd and explained that the promise of Jesus was meant for everyone who becomes a Christian…

Acts 2:38 (ESV) ~ And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

How does the indwelling of the Spirit transform us?

John declares that the Spirit will guide believers into the truth, tell us things to come, and glorify Jesus …

John 16:13-14 (ESV) ~ When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Paul states a similar point …

Romans 8:26-27 (ESV) ~ Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
