The Funniest Verses in the Bible

Matthew 27:62-66 (ESV) ~ The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’ Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.”  Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.” So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard.

Let’s stop to think about the world we live in today:

  • Atlantic Tropical and Subtropical Storms ~ 21
  • Pacific Tropical and Subtropical Storms ~ 24
  • Fires in California
  • North Korea
  • This is just to name a few items going on in the world today
  • QUESTION ~ Does the world need some Jesus?

Looking back at our verses, we see a world that has been turned upside down.

We see a group of people that have pushed the ruling government’s hand and charged an innocent man of crimes worthy of death.

We also see this same group of people afraid of bringing this man to the court when others are around him. They needed to capture him under cover of darkness.

Once captured, those that have this innocent man try to find a false testimony against him to have him put to death, but they found none. They charge him with blasphemy and say that he deserved death.

This man is taken to Pilate, the governor because the religious leaders could not put him to death. This was against the laws, legalism, that they are to uphold. “Thou shalt not kill.” They have found a loophole, take him to the government of the land and have Pilate kill him.

Pilate saw the evidence, Jesus was innocent; the religionists were envious of Christ and His threat to their security. Pilate was seeking for a compromise. He was trying to declare Christ innocent and to please those who were accusing Christ. Despite the clear evidence that Christ was innocent, Pilate lacked the courage and decisiveness to take a stand for Christ.

We all know what happens next. The scourging, the crown of thorns, the mocking, the crucifixion, and the burial.

Let’s look at the end, after the burial. Those religious leaders felt what had already happened wasn’t enough. I believe that deep within their hearts, they KNEW that Christ would rise. They wanted to stop Jesus from doing what He said He would do.

Notice the verses:

  • Verse 62 ~ the religious leaders have gathered back before Pilate
  • Verse 63 ~ the religious leaders quote Jesus “After three days I will rise.”
  • Verse 64 ~ the religious leaders, afraid of what will happen, believe that Jesus Christ can’t go against the government seal, after all the government leaders of the day have killed Him
  • Verse 65 ~ Pilate gives they a guard of soldiers and tells them to “make it as secure as you can.”
  • Verse 66 ~ “so they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard.” There was another time that a stone was set in place and a seal was placed so no one could enter. This was with Daniel and the lion’s den. Just like then, there is NO stone that can hold God out.

I am not against the government; however, I am against religionist, legalist people that believe that by quoting a bunch of laws, rules, and even bible verses, and then twisting them to fit their narrative, they believe they have done the right thing. We must realize, it is not religion, nor rules, nor laws that get us closer to God. How then? RELATIONSHIP is what matters.
