The Holy Spirit Falls

The Holy Spirit Falls

Acts 10:44-48 (ESV) ~ “While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared, “Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days.”

Four significant points to look at:

  1. The Holy Spirit fell on the Gentiles when they “heard the Word.” Hearing the Word of God WAS and IS necessary. It is one of the essentials for receiving the Holy Spirit. The idea is that that heard and believed and receive the truth of God’s Word into their hearts without Peter even telling them to believe. This is made clear in Acts 11:17. They heard and received the message, hungering, and thirsting for the Word of God in their lives. Therefore, they believed it immediately.
    1. What a glorious testimony! A Striking challenge to every unbeliever! To hunger and thirst so much for the Word of God and for His salvation that we do not wait for the invitation of the messenger. We just believe and receive while we are hearing.
    2. Matthew 7:24-25 (ESV) ~ Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.
  2. The Holy Spirit fell on the Gentiles “while Peter yet spake.” Peter was still preaching; he had not finished his message when the Holy Spirit fell. God and God alone caused the Holy Spirit to fall upon the Gentile believers, NOT the hands of Peter …
    1. Anointing them
    2. Being laid upon them
    3. Baptizing them
    4. Placing them into water
    5. No man had anything to do with God pouring His Spirit upon these believers. The gift of the Spirit was the act of God and God alone.
  3. “The Holy Spirit fell” and was “poured out” upon the Gentiles. Peter said the Gentiles “received the Holy Spirit as well as we have.” Note that God gave them the Holy Spirit after they “believed on the Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 11:17). Hearing the message (Acts 10:44) and “believing on the Lord Jesus Christ” are absolute essentials for receiving the Holy Spirit.
    1. 1 Corinthians 12:13 (ESV) ~ For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
  4. The Jewish believers were astonished or amazed. This refers to the six Jewish believers who had come with Peter (Acts 10:23). They had been taught from earliest childhood that the Holy Spirit was available only to the Jews. We now see that the gospel, Holy Spirit, and all God has for us is for the whole world!
