When You Start to Sink, Refocus Your Faith

When You Start to Sink, Refocus Your Faith

Matthew 14:25-33 (ESV) ~ And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Peter lost his focus. Verse 30 says, “But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, Lord, save me.” Peter’s focus wondered – to the crisis, the danger, the risk – and began to sink. I’m sure he thought to himself, “What am I doing out here?” Have we lost our focus? Have we put our faith in the wrong source and ended up disappointed?

Peter got his focus back on Jesus. He cried, “Lord, save me!” This was a prayer of complete dependence on Jesus. It was a prayer for help. Are you sinking in discouragement or depression? You can be saved from sin, depression, fear, failure, hopelessness – you will be saved.

Jesus reached out His hand and caught Peter. Verse 31 says, “Jesus immediately reached out His hand and took hold of him, …” Jesus is reaching out His hand to us today. Reach out and take His hand – He will never let you down.
