What? In the World?

John 17:13-16 ~ “But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.”

We have learned through these past few weeks that “the world” is important in John 17. Jesus used the word nineteen times and He used it in three different connotations to mean (1) the material creation as in verse 5; (2) people as in verse 18; and (3) the world system opposed to God as in verses 6, 14 and 15.

As a Christian, we have a unique position in life. We live in the world physically, but we are not of the world spiritually. While we are in the world, we must live unlike the world, because we must have a ministry to the people who are yet in the world. We are in the world to win people out of the world.

John 16:33 ~ “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

John 15:19 ~ “If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.”

Jesus Christ provides for us the spiritual resources we need to overcome the world.

  1. His Joy – (John 17:13)
    1. Jesus was and is heartbroken as He saw and sees people destroying themselves with sin.
    2. His heart was full of joy as He saw God at work, saving the lost and making lives new.
    3. He had the sorrow of the shepherd, seeking the lost sheep, and the joy of the shepherd, bringing home the sheep that had been found.
    4. Jesus shares His joy with us.
      1. John 17:13 ~ “But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.”
      2. John 15:9 ~ “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.”
      3. John 14:27 ~ “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
      4. Galatians 5:22 ~ “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness …”
    5. Christ gives us joy by transformation; the world offers us joy by substitution.
  2. His Word – (John 17:14)
    1. Since we are living in a deceived and a deceiving world, the possession of the truth of the Word of God is absolutely essential. it is not our word, but God’s Word, that overcomes the deceitfulness of this world system.
    2. Psalm 33:6, 9 ~ “By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.”
    3. 2 Peter 3:7 ~ “But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.”
    4. The world we are in will tip its hat to God on special occasions, but it actions say that it will never bow the knee on any occasion. We have more laws and yet more lawlessness, more knowledge and yet less wisdom, more wealth and yet fewer values, more power and yet greater weakness.
    5. The world system, of course, hates the Bible and has tried to destroy it. Satan denied God’s Word, Pharaoh laughed at God’s Word, King Jehoiakim burned the Word, and the world today consigns the Bible to a library shelf with other ancient religious books. But the Word of God remains!
  3. Our identification with Christ (John 17:14, 16)
    1. How do we put this identification into practice?
      1. We pray to our Father through the exalted Savior, and draw upon the spiritual power that we find at His throne of grace.
      2. Seeking to imitation Christ in our daily walk
    2. Of course, if we begin to live with Jesus Christ as our Pattern, the world will treat us like they did Him.
    3. It is disturbing to see the false view of the Christ life that is being promoted today. Preachers, pastors, singers, and authors talk as through our experience in the world is different from what the Savior when He was here. When these popularity promoters talk, they say little to nothing about the Cross.
  4. Christ’s intercession on our behalf (John 17:15)
    1. Our Lord deliberately prayed that the Father world keep us in the world! WHY? Because the world needs us, and we need the blessing that comes as we seek to represent Christ in the world.
    2. We are not here for isolation nor insulation nor imitation.
    3. We are here to reach the world and show the Love of God.

Christ’s joy, His Word, our identification with Him and His heavenly intercession for us are the divine resources we have for overcoming the world. Are we using them ALL?
