The Great Commission
Week Four ~ How We Make Disciples
Matthew 28:16-20 ~ “Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
In verses 18-20, there are three action words that are describing the command we are given:
  • going
  • baptizing
  • teaching
The command we are given is “make disciples”.
  • The command Jesus gives us individually and as a church is to make disciples.
  • This is the business of the church, to make disciples.
  • This is Jesus’ plan for reaching a lost world, the church making disciples.
So, what exactly is a disciple?
  • A disciple is someone who has placed their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • BUT … faith and trust is only the starting point to discipleship.
  • A disciple is to follow Jesus by continually learning from Christ and obeying all that He teaches.
SO … HOW do we make disciples?
  • We can’t obey the command of Jesus sitting or staying. We have to GO!
  • This action requires us to obey Jesus and take deliberate action OUTSIDE the doors of the church.
  • The people that need Jesus usually aren’t within the walls of the church building.
  • Baptism is a public profession of a person’s faith in Jesus Christ.
  • When we are baptized, we are standing before God and everybody else, showing our allegiance to Jesus Christ.
  • Baptism is one of the first acts of obedience for a new believer.
  • Our commission doesn’t end with leading someone to Christ and bringing them into the Church, we are to teach them also.
  • We are to teach them all the truths that the Bible reveals.
  • We are to teach them to obey what God tells us.
  • We are to teach them to go out and make more disciples.
SO … HOW do we make disciples?
  • This is God’s plan.
  • We go into the world.
  • Bring into the family of God.
That’s how we are to make disciples.
  • Are you obeying Jesus?
  • Are you going to a lost world?
  • Are you leading them to Christ?
  • Are you teaching someone?
  • Are you discipling someone?
  • Are you making disciples?
