The New Year

Philippians 3:12-14 (ESV) ~ Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

A Review of the Year Past:

  • Count our blessings and praise God for what was accomplished for His glory:
    • The prayers He answered for us
    • The people to whom we witnessed and won to Christ
    • The financial and service contributions we made to the church
      • Malachi 3:10 ~ “{10} Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”
      • Ephesians 6:6, 7 ~ “{6} Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; {7} With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:”
    • The times we were blessed and helped through prayer and the study of God’s word

  • Look back to see what we could have done for God and His work, but didn’t.
    • Could we have given more time and contributed more financially to the work of the Lord?
    • Could we have spent more time in prayer than we did?
    • Could we have refused to allow other activities to rob from us time we should have spent in reading and studying God’s Word?
    • Could we have shown more love and concern than we did for our brothers and sisters in Christ who were experiencing a difficult time in their lives?
      • Romans 13:8 ~ “Owe no man anything, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.”
    • Could we have tried harder to win more sinners to Christ? Couldn’t we have tried to win at least one person?

A Look Forward to the New Year:

  • Let’s begin the new year with praise, prayer and thanksgiving
    • 1 Thessalonians 5:18 ~ “In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
    • Praise God for another year He has granted us to serve Him and to live for Him.
    • Approach the new year with a personal determination to make it a far greater year than last year for God and His work.
  • Let us look forward through eyes of faith to the New Year and establish goals which, with God’s help, we can reach.
    • Look at your church and decide what YOU, as an individual, can do to make it better.
    • Determine that you will give more of your time to God and the church.
    • Determine you will face problems and difficulties with the determination to conquer them through Christ and the grace he provides.
      • Philippians 4:13 ~ “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
    • Determine, with God’s help, that you will live a more holy life and be a more exemplary Christian.
      • Hebrews 12:14 ~ “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:”
    • Consider your income and determine if there is any way you can do more financially to help promote the work of God and to win more people to Christ.
    • Consider, in a definite way, how much time you should set aside each day for prayer and the reading of God’s Word.
      • 1 Thessalonians 5:17 ~ “Pray without ceasing.”
      • Psalm 119:11 ~ “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”
    • Remind yourself that all around are people needing to know someone cares about them, someone loves them, and someone want to help them.
      • Galatians 6:2 ~ “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.”
