Why You Need to be Full of the Holy Spirit

Sunday, September 25, 2016

Ephesians 5:18 KJV ~ “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess, but be filled with the Spirit;”

  • Drunkenness means to be intoxicated
  • Excess means wasting away of the body; uncontrolled behavior; wild and outrageous behavior and conduct

Ephesians 5:18 ESV ~ “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,”

  • Debauchery means indulgence in sensual pleasures

The command in this verse is to be filled with the Spirit. This command is in the PRESENT tense, which means the believer is to be constantly filled with the Spirit.

God wants you to possess the full inheritance that He has for you.
  • Jesus said, “When He, the Spirit of truth, is come … He will shew you things to come.” (John 16:13)
  • Paul prayed, “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know … what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance” (Ephesians 1:18)

God wants you to have the Satisfying Portion
John 7:37-39 KJV ~ “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)”

  • You can take the Holy Spirit with you!

Isaiah 44:3 KJV ~ “For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:”

  • It’s not just a trickle!

Isaiah 41:18 ~ “I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water.”

  • Receive mighty rushing waters!

John 4:13-14 KJV ~ “Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”

  • Never thirst again!

God wants you to have the FIRE of the Holy Spirit
  • Fire is no stranger to God’s people.
  • 2 Kings 6:17 ~ Chariots of fire
  • Exodus 3:2 ~ Flame of fire
  • Genesis 15:17 ~ sacrifice consumed by fire
  • 1 Kings 18:38 ~ God answered prayer by fire
  • Exodus 13:21
  • 1 Corinthians 3:13
  • Hebrews 12:29
  • 2 Thessalonians 1:8
  • Acts 2:3 ~ Fire symbolizes the Holy Spirit

Without Fire we are …
  • Machines without power
  • Clouds without water
  • Trees without roots
  • Lamps without oil

With Fire we are …
  • Bright and shinning lights
  • Flaming oracles of God
  • An Elijah on Mount Carmel
  • Moses on top of a mountain
  • Joshua conquering Jericho
  • Peter on the day of Pentecost

Fire will affect people …
  • Jeremiah 20:9 ~ Fire was “shut up” in the bones of Jeremiah
  • Isaiah 6:6 ~ Isaiah receive d a coal of fire taken from the altar of God
  • The apostle Peter was transformed from a coarse, uncouth fisherman into a fiery evangelist.

Fire will affect a church …
  • Fire is a cleansing force
  • Fire is a separating force
  • Fire is a healing force
  • Fire is a transforming force
