Spiritual Warfare: Six Essentials for the Warrior

Sunday Morning, September 4, 2016

Psalms 18:27-34 KJV ~ “For thou wilt save the afflicted people; but wilt bring down high looks. For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness. For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall. As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him. For who is God save the Lord ? or who is a rock save our God? It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect. He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet, and setteth me upon my high places. He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.”

  • Today, most armed services have a six- to thirteen-week period of training.
  • After this training, the soldier begins to look and act differently.
  • David trained his four hundred soldiers with the truth found in Psalm 18.

Get under authority – submission (Psalm 18:27)
James 4:7 ESV ~ “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Hebrews 13:17 ESV ~ “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.”

  • Hebrews 12:1-2 gives the Christian his or her marching orders.

Hebrews 12:1-2 ESV ~ “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Get on fire for the cause – passion (Psalm 18:28)
  • Second goal of training is to inspire the warrior to have a passion for the cause.
  • All things being equal, the one with the most passion for the fight will win.
  • In our struggle against the enemy, we must be on fire to win the souls of men for God’s kingdom.

Be prepared for warfare – disciple (Psalm 18:28)
  • God will enlighten His soldiers.
  • We have been given the right armor and the right instructions.

Believe you can win – vision (Psalm 18:29)
  • Believing you can win and applying that believe shows you have faith in God.
  • The enemy’s army and obstacles fall before the spiritual soldier who has faith.

Know your weapons – power (Psalm 18:30-32, 34)
  • Notice first that God has a perfect battle plan.
  • The word perfect means “absolutely complete.”
  • Secondly, God has given us a sharp, two edged sword – His Word.
  • Furthermore, God grants us a shield of protection: faith.
  • Also, God exercises our gifts so our hands will be strengthened to make spiritual warfare.

Go to the next level – excellence (Psalm 18:33)
  • Training moves us to the next level of battle.
  • We can conquer the mountains before us.
